What is SAFE WA's Definition of a Parent?

The definition of a parent is just below.

The word "parent" is used frequently here at SAFE WA, by the Network Members, as well as the federal and state agencies that provide funding or services.

So the word parent can mean any of the following:

  • Biological Parents
  • Grandparents raising their grand children due to death, illness, or incarceration of parents
  • Relative Caregivers can include aunts, uncles, cousins, raising a child because the biological parents can't or won't
  • Step Parents usually become involved after a death or divorce and one of the biological parents has remarried
  • Foster Parents are also referred to as "parents" because the child is living with them temporarily, or they may be respite provider for the parents
  • Adoptive Parents are naturally, the parents who have adopted a child that was orphaned, put up for adoption by the biological parents, or became a ward of the state
